Mika and Raizo redux...

Re-posted from the Old Haunt because our favorite couple deserved it:

I can't understand how anyone who watched Ninja Assassin didn't see any chemistry between Mika and Raizo at all. Judging by these stills, they were putting off sparks when they probably weren't even trying to. Those who refuse to see what is so patently obvious are having a difficult time seeing past their stereotypes of both black women and Asian men and/or crazy Rain fangirlism.

Whoever made the decision not to further explore this relationship really missed out on something that had the potential to be very special and completely different. This film could have really stood out for doing something that no other movie of its kind ever does: Let the Asian hero actually get the girl. And the fact that said "getting the girl" would have ended with a AM/BW pairing would have probably garnered this movie a much larger fanbase. But they opted to punk out instead, falling back on old tropes and tired clichés.

Does anyone in Hollywood have any balls?

These last two are just because Raizo/Rain is fine and the fineness deserves to be appreciated. Enjoy!

  1. See...I've got a few theories as to this "lack of chemistry" bullshit we're seeing damn near everywhere.

    1) It's yet another knee-jerk response to seeing/hearing something someone - often white - doesn't like or feels intimidated by.

    2) Abagond once posted research about [most] white people's inability to see POC as "people". If you can't see characters first as human, then you won't pick up something like chemistry.

  2. On a thoroughly shallow note, I like Bi's hair long. It opens up his face and gives him a very mature appearance.

The lack of chemistry argument is so predictable. I always know it's coming when YT feels threatened. It's regular as clockwork.

  3. @Lenoxave

I'll be shallow with you...that's the kind of day I'm having. :) I like his hair long too, but I'd take it short. He looks good in both.

I usually don't go for long hair on men, but it really looks good on him. One of my fav scenes in the movie is when he was coming up the steps to his apt with those dark sunglasses on. His hair was all black and had that bouncin' and behavin' sexiness going on with that deep ass voice. *fans self* Lawd, lawd, lawd...

    @Ankh

Those are some really good points. It's probably a combination of both. If it's the second one, I fully co-sign.

But it's it the first, I still don't understand what a white girl (or guys sometimes) would have to feel intimidated about or what they don't like about two POC portrayed in a romantic relationship. What's it to them? Is it just because it's Rain and they're actually--gasp!--attracted to that particular Asian man? Or would it be the same if it was Jet Li (which I highly doubt)?

  4. I prefer the hair length he has now, perfect blend of sexy and cute. I generally prefer super short hair on guys but I think some length on top looks better on him than the shorter cut he had in "I'm coming" / Rain's World.

I also liked the hair cut he had in "A love to kill". Kinda long for my taste but super hot on him.

  5. The "lack of chemistry" argument is basically narcissism. They truly believe that only white people are attractive, no matter how good looking the POC is they think they are less attractive than the average white person.

Prime example of this was when Shia LaBeouf was photographed at a bar with Rhianna a few years ago. All the comments on Perez Hilton's site said how they don't look right together, they don't know what he sees in her, she is not his type. Um, WTF Shia is funny/adorable but Rhianna blows him out the water in the looks department. Yet they all seemed to sincerely believe that Rhianna is not good looking enough for an average white boy.

Because such a relationship shows that they [WP] are not our focus and that POC are perfectly content marrying one another.

  7. POC are perfectly content marrying one another.

Yes, we are!!! We are perfectly content to be with each other and never think about WP at all. Freedom. Glorious freedom.

The Husband posited a theory about the lack of Mika/Raizo loving. First, Naomie's breasts are too small to be interesting and second, after all of that training Rain probably wasn't interested in even faux-sex. Okay, it was funnier when he said it. Making crackpot comments while maintaining a straight man facade is one of the reasons why I'll love that man beyond death.

No, actually...it's still pretty funny. I can see Rain all worn out and nodding off during rehearsals and read-throughs asking the director, "Dude...when we do it, is it okay if I just lie there?"

  9. Let me tell you. I was lucky enough to go to the Ninja Assassin movie premiere in LA. Rain was there, of course, looking all types of good. There were a lot of Asian women (fangirls) in the audience. Anytime Raizo and Mika looked like they were going to be intimate, those girls would start yelling and displaying their disapproval. Me being a black girl, could not believe it!
For some reason I was embarrassed because I know he added this experience to the montage of memories he had in America.
