The Rare Blasian Couple in Print

Superstars Beyoncé and Japanese singer/actor Takuya Kimura strike several poses in a print ad campaign for Japanese fashion label Samantha Thavasa.  Even nearly two years later, the company is still using one of the photos as the profile picture on their Facebook page (at least as of today).

That's some big-time Blasian star power right there...and it's absolutely gorgeous.

TOKYO — American singer Beyonce Knowles, 27, and SMAP member Takuya Kimura, 35, will appear together in ads for luxury handbag brand Samantha Thavasa from Thursday.

In an official comment, Kimura said, “I enjoyed the time with her. She is really sexy and cute. I can learn many things from her to be a nicer guy.” Beyonce was quoted as saying, “Kimura is very handsome, strong, manly and sexy.”

The ads were made at the end of October when Beyonce visited Japan. The two spent about two hours together in the studio. Beyonce said Kimura taught her some Japanese words.

The ads will appear in the brand’s 117 shops nationwide as well as on billboards in Aoyama, Daikanyama and Harajuku. Kimura is the first male model for the brand’s ads.  [Nov. 2008]

My favorite remark from the Japan Today article:
I like that they chose a foreign woman who is not under 25, not white and not a toothpick for their ad. Variety is the spice of life ;-)

Amen to that!

The funny thing is, it didn't really hit me until I came across these photos that you see Blasian couples in print ads even more rarely than you do on film.  I've been trying to find Blasian print ads that only use "regular" models (I know...that's an oxymoron), but have yet to find any.

But of course, since it's all the rage to pair black women up with white men nowadays (especially in Western countries), I can't say I'm all that surprised.

  1. Hell yes I am so excited to see this. What a great move from the ads that depict only whites buying luxury items. And they look sexy together. Glad someone figured out the sexiness of Blasian interactions :D

  3. this should happen more often... non-celebrity models (regular people off the street) would be a nice touch (and a lot more realistic). *^_^*

OMFG! Who would believe anything like this? First, Kimutaku's ego is as large as the Milky Way. Second, he and Beyonce have already met. She's been a guest on Bistro SMAP. The man and his fellow slaves (of Johnny) have cooked for her. Third, Kimutaku has probably been exposed to every single sexy woman (black or otherwise) in the American music and the movie industry. Fourth, Shizuka Kudo.

I wonder if I would have noticed this ad on my own simply because it isn't unusual for people of color to dominate here. Japan isn't Korea. Not seeing that many "white" people in print and on television is the norm. It's funny because without Cinnamon's help, I probably never would have seen this ad. Interesting. Thanks! :D

I wonder who Samantha Thavasa is... Thanks to Beyonce, I guess I'll find out.

Yeah, it always comes back to that, doesn't it? Black women are scary, and Asian men are easily intimidated by the sight of (black) breasts. Sheesh.

    @Hateya

    Anytime! :)

  11. @Hateya, whoever said that was just really a detractor of Black women. thanks for clearing things up.

  16. Well see thats why we should look outside the box. Black women are just as beautiful as any other women, we are all ppl, it shouldnt be about what race looks better at all we are all human. Reasons why Blasian couples are rare is 3 reasons, Stereotypes about each side, different cultures, and fear of being unique.

If we all can face this and learn to defeat stereotypes on the media, and learn that first of all we all dont act like those stereotypes and be ourselves for once insted of go what our parents say that was reinforced in our brains we will have more confident interracial couples and no one will be so shocked to see what true love looks like.. whether if u want to or not be your effin self then maybe we'll have AMBW and BMAW couples.
