Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997)

Twelve years before there was Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen, we had Brandy Norwood as Cinderella and Paolo Montalban as Christopher/Prince Charming.

Their chemistry was off the charts.  Brandy was absolutely gorgeous, feminine and cherished by her man and Paolo was sexy as hell, loving and utterly masculine...something that black women and Asian men are rarely ever allowed to be on film and especially not all at the same time.  With Hollywood's track record in this regard (right up until today, FlashFoward notwithstanding), it's still hard to believe that this casting choice was made way back in 1997.

***The good stuff starts at the 3:09 mark.***

  1. i remember watching this movie as a kid; i haven't seen it in years! i'd really like to watch it again sometime soon.

  2. I watched it again this past weekend and was just as enchanted as I was the very first time that I saw it back in the '90s. The only difference is, now I'm old enough to really appreciate just how damn fine Paolo Montalban is. Lawd.

  3. Sweet! I vaguely remember this. I should go out and buy it.

  4. I remember this is as well. When Paolo went on to star as Kung Lao in the short-lived "Mortal Kombat" series, I followed his every move.

I was surprised at the casting choice, but no less delighted. Paolo's so tall and gorgeous.

  5. Oh wow! I remember this and Whitney Houston was the Fairy Godmother. Brings back memories.

  6. I'd forgotten all about this, even with the recent discussion of color blind casting this movie slipped my mind. Yes that scene at 3:09 was particularly hot for a Cinderella movie. They had great chemistry.

  7. Ah memories. This guy was my first fairy tale crush. The vast number of white heroes in previous Disney movies had nothing on this guy. XD

  9. My goodness this is my favorite movie.. hehe one of my first crushes!! Now I am with a Filipino Guy :P

  10. I was 8 years old when this first came out.
Still love it! I love the fact that the entire cast was multi-racial.
It was great! Soundtrack also AWESOME!
I was so crushing on the Filipino guy as an 8 year old. ^-^

    1. Here's a link to a live they did of he song.
The had GREAT off screen chemistry:

  11. Now THAT Hollywood, is how you make a freaking movie! I am so shocked that I forgot about this movie, it was one of my favorites when I was little. Now I need to go and find the vhs so I can watch it again :)

  12. I loved this movie. I followed Paolo when he was on the Mortal Kombat spin off, and he's always been a briliant actor. Whoopi was killing me with the speeachlessness! If she had seen her baby boy prior to him running in, I'm sure she would have found something to say!

  13. I remembered the Cinderella movie back in '97 and it was brilliant on Whitney Houston's part to include the Asian man/Black woman combo. I also remember the backlash from white folk who didn't want to see that true multiracial movie. Those entitled people think that everything must revolve around them, ignoring billions of POC around the earth. Whitney Houston didn't bow down to pressure when she made that movie.

Bravo Whitney Houston and may she rests in peace!
