Blasian Music Video: Janet Jackson - "If"

Yeah...you read that right.  I was wandering around aimlessly on YouTube tonight, decided to watch some videos and stumbled upon something that had my mouth hanging open:  A Blasian Janet Jackson video.  Say whaaat?  The first thing that popped into my mind was, "When the hell did that happen and why have I never seen it before?"

But that's not all.  Upon trying to find the most watchable video, I discovered that there are two versions.  One has a distinctly Blasian theme to it (which I've never seen) and one very much does not (which I believe is the version that got the heavy rotation on MTV...at least here in the States).  Really...it's like two completely different videos.

Sorry, I can only link to this video on YouTube because the embedding has been disabled:

Of course, IMO, the Blasian version is richer in depth, and actually makes a lot more sense when you consider Janet's body language, the atmosphere and her smoldering off-stage eye contact.  With the Blasian version, you actually get to see who she has the hots for ('cause it certainly ain't the guy she's dancing with), and let's just say that when you see him, the words in the song suddenly make a lot more sense.

Now, I'm not sure how I feel about the been-done-a-million-times-before theme, but I love the dancing, and I must say...the casting director was truly on his or her game because the men in the video were something to look at.

It also didn't fully strike me until near the end of the video that Janet seemed to be singing to and performing for that gorgeous, gorgeous man who couldn't keep seem to keep his eyes off her (nor could she keep her eyes off him).  Unfortunately, they didn't get anywhere near each other in the video, but it got downright hot up in there at the end with all the copious amounts of eye sex going on.  We certainly know who Janet was leaving with that night.  Whew!

Has anyone else seen this version of the video or am I the only one in the dark?

Screencaps!

Really...I must know who this man is.  Lawd.  Have.  Mercy!

*As an aside, I'd just like to say that all the craptastic music and "entertainment" that we're subjected to nowadays can't hold a candle to the Janet Jackson's of the world. I can't remember the last time I saw a performance like this and this is just a video. Boy, do I miss real performers/performances. /rant

  1. Cinnamon parrallel thinking alert. I had that rant the other day. I posted this video on my Facebook like two days ago like: " Who is a Beyonce, or a Rihanna, or a Gaga? Fuck those those talent deficient hoes. The only person who comes ever remotely close to Janet's Swagger is Janelle Monae.

I loove me some Janelle Monae and am so pissed she is so SLEPT on here in the US. Argh.

I did not know about his version either. WTF? Why? It doesn't make any sense since Janet was at the height of her fame, during this point in her career.

WP have this weird idea that interracial couples only work when THEY are in them. Because other cultures are "so much more racist than they are" even though they know nothing about those other cultures. They have this assumption that the values of their culture are universal.

Its very ignorant and annoying. Racism is not universal. Cultural and Ethnic conflicts are but usually they are based on something substantial, like the conflicting interests of cultures that have different customs and attitudes. Even that usually has something to do with other factors primarily the environment.

The fact that the cultures are different does not guarantee that they will be in conflict with one another. There are plenty of places where cultures as different as night and day, intermarry and live together peacefully.

  2. I just remembered in her other video "Love will never do with you" She was getting all up on this white model, I think it's Antonio Sabato Jr.

I realize the concepts for both songs are different but if her showing IR romance is okay in that video, why would it be off limits in "If"?

  3. Curiously, I remember the Blasian version. Perhaps this was on our rotation because the Japanese owned my Southern home state during this time frame. You know, Japanese, Chinese = interchangeable. Yikes, I shouldn't have clicked on the link because I've spent the last hour watching Janet in all of her Awesomeness!!

Can I get a "Blasian screencaps" tag, please? I think I'm starting to make enough of these posts to deserve its own. Thanks!

    Your wish....

Pure awesomeness, btw. Why oh why were we deprived of this? This is the proper version. This "If" as it should be. And yes, we need to find out who this man. He is too fine for anonymity.

    Thank you kindly!

It's what they do. They feel so damn threatened by anyone but the white man being the center of attention, that...well, you know the rest.

And I agree with you...this was the proper, much more interesting version of the video. I'm mad that I'm just seeing this seventeen years after the fact.

Preach! Hence the plethora of black, Latina and Asian women being paired up with white men on TV and in the movies nowadays. It's almost a rare thing to see WoC paired with a Moc (in any combination). It's becoming so blatant and obvious. It's like they're no longer even trying to hide it anymore...if they ever were. They're loud and proud with thier no-longer-subliminal, no-longer-subtle "hints." Ironically, they want us with white men. Period.

It's like they think they have a right to us or something. And any black woman (or WoC) that won't submit needs to be destroyed. You see how they treat Michelle Obama.

White man yes; Asian man hell no. Or as I said elsewhere...white men good, all others bad. I guess if they shove it down our throats enough, we'll start to believe the hype and submit for our own good.

They obviously don't know me/us at all.

  9. I completely blanked on this version! Damn, I was obsessed with the Janet album and missed this. It's definitely more intriguing/hot than the "official" video.

Bamboozled and hood winked, but then the white man good, e'one else bad phenom you talked about his been in effect since the 90's.

  10. *blinks* "janet" alternates with "Rhythm Nation" as my favorite Janet Jackson album. All hail Miss Janet! *bows*

Didn't know there was a Blasian version of "If." Jeezum crow, shoot-a-monkey-in-springtime...Why in the hell didn't I know this video existed?

  12. I used to love "If". It came out summer of 1993 when I was stuck home recovering from surgery and watching tv all day. Never seen this version of the video. I've been complaining about the quality of music since 2000 so I was officially an old woman at 20.

  13. The blaisan version is the only one I've ever seen. Some years ago there was a video countdown thing and "If" was number 1. I recorded it too good ole VCRs.

  14. It sucks that this version was "hidden" all this time. I vaguely remember seeing this version once, but usually the shorter version was shown.

Strange that this would be taboo since there was a lot of interracial lovin' in her "That's The Wat Love Goes" video.

  18. I just came across this post, but no, that is not Theo in the Janet video. The dancer's name is Michael Gong.

  19. I am so glad I came across this post. I haven't seen Theo in years! For those that want confirmation...NO Theo is NOT in the IF video. He made a cameo as a dark shadow in That's The Way Love Goes. That's when Jennifer Lopez was still a back up dancer for her and you'll see her on that video. Theo is the love struck fan in Shanice's I Wish video and yes he made a cameo in the intro for 2Pacs All About You video. He can also be seen as one of Jon B's bodyguards in Are U Still Down. I could go on and on about Theo. Yes he got his start in the Bay Area as an overnight DJ for the infamous KMEL but grew quickly into fandom once he made his way as the top DJ in Los Angeles for 92.3 The Beat. Again I could go on and on with Theo. As for Kevin Stea, he is also a good friend with a long list of videos, movies, cameos, live performances etc for many major big names in the entertainment industry. He is also the coolest guy in the planet, beautiful and very talented. I hope this helps!! Thank you...Your Girl D*
