Racebending.com reaches out to Warner Bros. (Updated)

**UPDATE**: Cracked.com joined in with FIVE good reasons NOT to remake Akira period!!!!

Ladies and gents, Racebending.com has drawn a line at the proposed cast of Hollywood's shallow impending version of Akira. Click on the link above and see the list of participating organizations. They've also penned a letter to Warner Bros.

This is a GOOD start, but I worry it won't have enough impact. The organizations involved are virtually all ASIAN-AMERICAN groups. They need to reach out and bring more diversity to the table before trying to take on the Axis of Evil in Hollywood. If Black, Hispanic, Native American and other groups aren't encouraged to join in this fight, then it's unlikely the studio will back down. I HOPE I'm wrong. I want to be wrong.

Still... I don't know how much Warner Bros. paid Toho for the right to create a live action version of Akira, but it had to be a lot. Hollywood is banking on recouping their losses from Asian audiences in Asia. For this reason, instead of focusing solely on Asian American buying power, the protesting groups need to convince Warner Bros. that Asian audiences in Asia will want to see them as well. However, if you peep at what's been imported into North East Asia, you'll see that Asian audiences in Asia haven't been too receptive to hyphenated Americans. After all, they've got guys like this "sweet piece."

Ladies, if you can identify him, please do. Because of this Korean hunk, I'm watching commercials. His voice... *fans self*

  1. I believe that "hunk" is Jang Geunseuk, Korean actor/Singer/Model. He's in the drama "Mary stayed out all night" along with another Korean Hunk Kim Jae Wook.

  2. That's Jang Geuns Suk! I know him from Hong Gil Dong.

  3. Warner Bros. need to just go ahead and burn to the ground now.

I hope the 30 pieces they paid Toho was worth it.

    Mad props to Racebending.com, though.

  4. I remember him from "You're Beautiful."

Chuck D. & PE called it back in the day.

"Burn Hollywood, Burn" indeed. It just never ends.

  5. Loving the hottie. I just wished Toho would have pulled a Gaiman and protected his work from Hollywhite. Hopefully he didn't know exactly what would happen... hopefully.

  6. Does this mean he's the Baby and Me guy? Downloading...

    @GoddessMaverick and Ankhesen

I'm fairly certain Toho Studios is as evil as Warner Bros. Toho knows that Japanese women have moved way past Hollywood. They probably got into this just to make a quick buck. In Japan, the roads are paved with Korean hunk gold. Korean-based fantasies have grown so large, the Chinese and Taiwanese are having a hard time slipping in. Domestic guys, led by Kimutaku, are still doing well, too. The most popular Western movies of late have been "Red," "True Grit" and "The King's Speech." Only "Harry Potter" and animated films have done better. Even "Twitlight" wasn't exactly successful here.

    Hollywhite?! I'm cracking up.

  7. "Hollywhite" - best one ever.

That article on Cracked.com had me rolling. I mean, the points are very good and all but, truly...I was just rolling.

"No, Akira, that quintessentially Japanese classic, is being recast with the whitest white people this side of a Mint Julep."

    Lawd!!!

  8. It's not called Cracked.com for nothing! ROTFLMAO!

  9. That's Jang Geun Suk, he's a Korean multi-talent (i.e. singer, actor, & model) and yes, my friend, he is absolutely GORGEOUS! I hope he never cuts that long, sexy hair *_*

But back to the point. Cracked.com's article is as valid as it gets. Using 9/11 to relate to a JAPANESE story is nationalistic bull. And WHY THE HELL IS TETSUO FREAKIN' 'TRAVIS'?! Why don't you just call Akira 'Steve' while you're at it?!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Tetsuo & Kaneda = Travis and Kevin??? WHAT THE FUCK??? The Hughes Brothers need to be beat all up and down I-95 for this shit! THEY SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

But money talks and bullshit walks...at least until this movie undergoes an epic fail at the box office, a la Dragonball and Airbender. When will motherfuckers recognize that WE DON'T WANT TO SEE THAT SHIT! If I wanted to see a movie about a "Travis" I'd watch "Clueless!"

Alas here, I'm preaching to the choir.

*sigh* I shall return to my own little private world and continue working on "Precession."

  11. If they're changing the races, the city, the language, the names, and the story...what the hell do they need "Akira" for?

No, seriously; is it strictly for the hype? Are they cashing in one the whole "legend" factor?

I think the white saturation genre has finally come to a head. Hollywhite knows no one will pay to see a film about a couple of white guys. There are already so many, and it's all already been said. So now they're using the hype of POC culture and achievement to sell another boring film about white people, starring unremarkable white actors whom most of the world doesn't really care about. Because to Hollywhite, that's "diversity." *retches*

This movie is sooooo going to fail. It's going to break the record of failure; fuck, it may very well make Hollywhite long for the box office successes of Airbender and Dragonball Z.

  12. " This movie is sooooo going to fail."

You can say that again with a capital F. I just looked at a clip of the anime version of Akira on the Facebook part. OMG..They can't shouldn't...let this movie be released! This is just the anime cartoon and it SUCKS to the core! It reminds of a modern day ,screwed version of The Outsiders. If they wanted to make a movie about streetgangs, they could have gotten Hell's Angels for that.

Even the other posters on the FB see that the 2011 Akira is a debauchery. This should tell those guys in Hollywood this isn't going work.I also agree that more non-Asian groups should be with them to protest this movie. Just because they aren't Asian doesn't mean it doesn't affect them. It has and it still does as too much racebending have been done in all the communities. As long as Hollywood think they can get away with this, they will.As one of the posters on FB said, let the Japanese make a version of Gone With The Wind and see will they like it.-M

PS- I didn't agree with the Black guy looking Sambo-ish in it. That has to go!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think the black guy thing was done on purpose. "inevitable black gang member" With the whole "true dat yo!" adding a black guy for 'diversity' but make him a stereotype so whites still shine.

Oh lawd! I'd be cackling like a loon while watching people's blood pressure hit the roof if that should happen. Please, Lord, let that happen! >:D

  15. I'm so sick of white saturation in the American media, I could scream. I'm tired of every new tv show and/or movie being crammed full of white faces. I'm tired of rarely seeing black women on TV or on film, and if they do happen to slide in, I'm tired of seeing them paired off with white men.

I'm tired of the white-washing, I'm tired of the white guilt fantasy movies, and I'm tired of white men's insecurities being turned into two-hour long therapy sessions a la Beastly, I Am Number Four and the the king of all kings, Avatar. In fact, I'm just tired, period.

Sorry, but I'm feeling a bit cynical and pessimistic today. Can't you tell? :)

    Naaaah.

Except when it makes white fangirls angry. I'll admit it amuses me to an extent.

It's definitely amusing to watch them flop around like dying fish. And Gwen and Arthur Merlin-style are definitely epic. I admit...I ship them hard (though I sincerely hope they veer away from one telling of the legend with the cheating on Arthur with Lancelot bit).

I certainly don't mind BW/WM pairings (Jack and Allison from Eureka are one of my fav couples on TV...and yay--they finally got together this season!), but I'm tired of that being all we get to the exclusion of all other couples. It's getting real old, real quick.

Right there with you. Especially since, personally thinking, it's not my thing.

  19. T_T the tears in my eyes are flowing. I'm sorry but Akira is sacrosanct in Japanese animated media. This truly is spitting in the creators faces. What's best is that no matter how much Hollywood knows they can't righteously defend whitewashing, they still continue to do it anyway. I can hear the netizen excuses now: (paraphrased to reveal unspoken implication behind common statements made and what Hollywood seems to want to feed us. rehash of Last Airbender fiasco)

1)Oh there aren't enough Asian-american well known actors'
2)Oh we want the audience to be able to relate to the characters
3)This is exactly what everyone wants, this is what we're use to. God forbid that people want to see Asians being awesome on TV.

Ladies, may I call bullsh*t on this?

1)Don't have enough AA actors that are well known? Guess what you do when that happens? RECRUIT NEW TALENT! It's your fault there aren't enough in the mainstream anyway. Oh and I'm sorry did you forget about the English speaking Asians in Canada, UK, and Australia :D. Lemme tell ya something Hollywood, EVERYONE wants to see fresh new talent REGARDLESS of the face.

2)This is my favorite excuse in the book. Last time I checked I felt more at home with my Rainbow Crew growing up in Miami than I did with little Susie in 1st grade who openly refused to share her crayons with me because I was black. . I don't understand how white=the only race everyone can relate to. Teens, criticism of their culture aside, relate to people more by similar interests these days ESPECIALLY when they have no choice but to immerse themselves diversity. Don't kid yourself by pretending to show concern for your young audience with this nonsense.

3)HAHA of course. I pray the thousands upon thousands of Akira fanboys/girls show mercy on your pitiful soul. This merciful one will attempt to make ripping you a new one as painless as possible. I make no promises.
