Audrey & Dre (2011) ~ Episodes 4 & 5

My mistake...I received these in the wrong order and posted them out of order. So what we thought was Episode 3 was actually Episode 4. Here it is with 5.

But first...a quick announcement.  I got an email this morning from the fabulous Audrey Kelley herself letting me know the new eps were up and that she's been reading our comments here and appreciates the feedback.  So I'm hoping that Narrators will continue watching the show and providing critiques in hopes that we'll get more Blasian projects up and running, and that they'll be of superior quality.

  1. I'll go first:

    1) Not digging the soundtrack.
    2) Still not digging the vloggers.
    3) REALLY not digging the talk show format.

As for the lack of chemistry, I get it. Audrey Kelley/Zuri Alexander has quite a bit of acting experience, while Andrew Chen is still developing his own style. I still admire these actors for what they did, I'm glad to finally be getting to watch the show, and it's good to see this project out there. Just as it was a learning experience for them, it's a bit of a learning experience for Moi as well.

  2. The soundtrack sounds like it came from one of those royalty free music websites. I can tell because I'll hear all the same tracks/sound effects in internet videos and reality TV shows.

I like how they show random other random character's opinions on the topic in question, though. I think it's cute.

  3. D,
ya gotta agree with ankhesan on points 1 through 3.
its VERY hard for me to get past the bad acting, poor quality music, and a major format of the show that i just can't stand!!!

  4. Boooo! Repeat of Zoe and Dimitri. Why oh why must there always be serious pathology with blasian relationships?
I agree with Ank's 1&3 but vlogger Shannon was the only one not talking nonsense. WTF is up with Dre saying that "that guy was a cheater, I'm not" and that just being left unchallenged?
As far as positives I do like the visual appearance of the show. That has always been well done.

Because the show wasn't originally conceived as "Blasian" - Dre's race was unspecified during the casting process, while the story was already written.

Unfortunately, in their attempt to portray problems which can happen to any couple, they've stumbled into a sort of pattern we've seen in FlashForward and Taken from Me in which, as you pointed out, Blasian relationships are shown as having some sort of innate pathology.

I admire that the staff ultimately decided to go Blasian, but once they did, they should've done more research as to how Blasian relationships have been previously portrayed, and taken notes on what NOT to do. I mean, they had Sam Cacas on speed dial, for pygmy's sake.

I agree with Ank's 1&3 but vlogger Shannon was the only one not talking nonsense.

Girl...I just want the vloggers gone already. I'm not digging this format. I just want to see Audrey & Dre.

    Yeah...what's up with that?

  7. I have the same issues I had with the previous episode. The V loggers really don't belong in the story right now. I don't like the talk show host and flashbacks of the decline of their marriage, can get annoying if this is the format she's sticking with.

Exactly. I don't care about the public's opinions on marriage; Americans are the last people to be giving any advice on that anyway.

I want the story already. I don't want to "hear about marriage", I want to know the Blasian narrative of this marriage.

Make no mistake, this format is very creative - high marks for thinking outside the box-ish - but it seems like in every episode, Audrey and Dre - as in, the stars/protagonists - get one conversation, and overall less lines than everyone else. WTF???? I don't give a fuck about these other people!

  9. To clarify: I don't like the vloggers/talk show concept in general but this episode got my goat so entirely that Shannon's commentary was the high point for me. I don't actually want to see more of the vloggers than the couple.

Sigh, I may have to accept that even though this show has a relationship that looks like mine, it is not meant to be in any way shape or form representative of a blasian relationship since Dre was unspecified. I'm pretty close to feeling indifferent towards this series. The best web series I've seen has been K-town cowboys but I haven't seen awkward black girl yet.

  10. "WTF is up with Dre saying that "that guy was a cheater, I'm not" and that just being left unchallenged?"

I thought it was just me. I have to say I didn't enjoy this episode, and like some of you I couldn't stand the vloggers. However I liked the one with Sam Cacas better, but I'm sick of the statistics debates everytime there's a bw in an interracial relationship. Can't we just talk about a normal couple, solving their issues, and just that? I'm telling you I give this series one more chance, but if it doesn't get better I give up on it.

  11. Yeah uh, I agree with all of you, this show pretty much sucks. I'll go to episode 10 and if it still sucks, than I'm done. And yes bring back Zoe and Dimitri that was a great show. Fuck ABC for canceling it. I hope a show with a blasian couple pops up soon. Like Yun Choi or Karl Yune with a Black Women. Yun Choi I think was with a black woman for a little bit in the Barbershop series. Anyway, I swear I hate how short these episodes are so much and how they don't focus on the couple all that much either.

  12. With a Black Woman*

  13. Sigh. See this is where I get into the conflict of supporting "black/blasian" things vs. supporting "good" things. I think Single Ladies on VH1 is a terrible show but I watch weekly because there are so few shows with black women in the lead. But damn it's a terrible show. And feel the same way about Audrey and Dre. Like Single Ladies, it's damned terrible but how many TV shows or webisodes can we find about blasian couples that aren't filmed in someone's dorm room with their webcam? It's frustration to think about.

@zoopath: Watch Awkward Black Girl. It's low budget, but hilarious and pretty easy to relate to.

I really feel ShaSha on this one. On the one hand, I'm kinda disappointed that this show is turning out this way. But on the other hand...we have a Blasian show. It's "on" right now. I can regularly post full episodes here at the Narrative, and Narrators can pick them apart.

Hopefully, we will become a sort of critical resource.

  15. Episode 5, I think, is the best so far.

  16. I liked this episode. (5)

"That guy is a cheater I am not" irritated me too.

    What is Zoe and Dimitri?

  17. Yes, episode 5 is the best so far by far. Is it a coincidence that the best episode so far had Sam Cacas and no vloggers? I don't think so. This episode did have a bit of interracial dating 101 and statistics quoting that would bore any one like us who have already made it past the numbers to actually making a relationship work. However, there are a lot of people who don't have a clue and this would be the first they've heard of the disparity. So I can kinda understand why time was spent discussing the numbers even though the rest of us want more plot.
It's cool to know that the show's creator is open to our feedback

    "That guy's a cheater; I'm not."

In what court of law do you know would a statement like that fly? "That guy's a drug dealer; I'm not." "That guy's a pedophile; I'm not." "That guy's a serial killer; I'm not."

    Oh, please.

    @ DN

    What is Zoe and Dimitri?

Zoey and Demetri. Blasian couple from FlashForward.

    @ Zoopath

I don't think so either. I loved this ep!!! I saw comments on YouTube stating something similar, about how the one with Sam is the best.

  19. Episode 5 is the best so far. We critique because we care. I think that "potential" has to become "execution". It seems to be the biggest problem. Yeah, Sam would've been a great resource. I'm still going to follow this series and see where it goes.
