'The Walking Dead': Who is the Sword-Wielding Character, Michonne?

"Who is that?" or "What the...?" were the words spoken by fans of 'The Walking Dead' AMC series while watching the season-two finale.

The mysterious sword-wielding rescuer of Andrea with zombies chained to her belt is non other than the one and only Michonne. She has been described as one of the most anticipated fan-favorite characters in the graphic novels as well as the sword-wielding zombie-slaying heroine. Michonne has finally made her on-screen debut in the AMC series leaping from pages to television.

Actress Danai Gurira, who has appeared on the HBO series 'Treme,' will be playing an incredible role and adding a new interesting twist in the already captivating series. Danai, who has a Master of Fine Arts Degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, will be a welcome new character to the group and hopefully leave fans anticipating season-three in October. What are you looking forward to seeing? Is the TV series living up to your expectations of the graphic novel? What would you want to happen?

  1. I'm so excited *dances*. I've never seen a fandom be so excited about a black female joining the cast.

Side Note: What does the arrival of another black character mean for T-Dog ... will he be killed off?

    1. >>>>> I'm definitely a fan of THE WALKING DEAD!!!! I've seen all the episodes from the AMC series so my thought are purely based on that series and not the graphic novel. I'm so hyped about Michonne and I've heard so many good things so far.

I don't know if they'll kill off T-Dog but some people are saying that Michonne and T-Dog might hookup. lol. I don't know how I feel about a badass character doing that.

    2. As it stands, T-Dawg is useless. He doesn't do anything but be the token Negro. He has no point, no purpose other than that. It's easy to forget he's even in the show. I'd rather him be killed off than be treated the way he is. If Michonne is really the BAMF I've heard about, T-Dawg is of no use to her other than be decoration on her belt like the other two zombies.

    4. Although ole boy who cut off his hand is also coming back this season.....big country's older brother.....and he had it out for T-Dog for leaving him for dead.... so it might get interesting.....Also the damn world as we know it has ended can we use proper Christian names.....T-Dog....SMDH

  2. T-Dog was taking up space....no lines just standing there.....I am soooo excited.....I was about ready to give up on TWD when basically all the minority characters were killed off or drove off to oblivion in season one.......

  3. I squealed when she appeared on the screen. Season 3 just got really good! T-Dog needs to die or get some character development. Michonne can do better.

    2. **Spoiler**

I abhor the idea of Michonne & T-Dog. The reason being is that T-Dog is not a character in the graphic novel and basically is a poor man (very poor)Tyrese if this is who he is trying to portray. Tyrese is another major character in the graphic novels and becomes Ricks right hand man along with Michonne.

It really pisses me off that Tyrese is not in the story line, but hopefully he will eventually make an appearance, and it pisses me off even more that T-dog is just part of the numbers game for television, lets have 1 POC.

    3. Im with Meanie on this one. T-Dog is a shallow version of Tyrese and i would rather not see Michonne with him at all. I really hope they do something with t-dog in season 3. But for sure, their luck changed with the addition of Danai Gurira. Twitter was on fire when she showed up at the end of season 2.

  4. Also when is the Narrative going to look at the cutie Glen or Walker Bait.....lol

  5. @Dulce...

Boy, that shit pisses me off to no end. When it finally clicked for Glen (via Maggie), I was like, "FINALLY!" Even though I think Glen's 'ship with Maggie is total and complete horseshit.

Not to stray off topic; however, that does need to be acknowledged.

    2. There's no chemistry between them. Just sayin'.

    3. Not sure about in the show, maybe it's just the writing, but in real life the two have tons of chemistry together:

  6. I read the graphic novels before the tv series started, if anyone wants to read them get the (The Walking Dead-Compendium One)-http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332979831&sr=8-1

Its a big book that has a collection of the graphic novels The Walking Dead #1-48. I'm hoping they will put out a volume two for the rest of the stories.

I also hate how they are portraying Glen in the tv series... *sigh*

  8. I was debating on watching the show from what many commenters have been saying about the show..but that video clip was exciting and I will have to do some catching up (season 1, ep 1 up.. D:) but I really like the strength of this new character. On T-Dog and Michonne,if what everyone says about T-Dog is true let's hope they don't get together because all I see is fail if that relationship happened. He would probably drag her down.

  9. I actually dislike the TV show because of how it veers off from the graphic novel and how certain characters are alive, well and annoying when they're supposed to have been LONG dead. The arrival of Michonne is AMAZING though; she's such a good character!!

I'm disappointed that people have to ask who she is though, seriously, they haven't picked up the graphic novel? They're missing out on so many themes and character development that the silly TV show doesn't even skim. Plus there's a major lack of Lori eye bulges and Rick's horrible accent, tell me that doesn't make it worth it.

    1. Anything that doesn't have that fucking useless shit-starter Olive Oyl knockoff Lori is win in my book. I'm so ready for her to die and I couldn't give a shit she's pregnant.

I have the compendium in my Amazon queue. Can't wait to read it.

    2. Lori is the reason I stopped watching Walking Dead after season one. The only episode of season two that I watched was the finale. Should I go back and watch the other episodes?

@Amaya I'm waiting for Lori to get got ... and the son.

  10. I like the idea of two zombies chained to a sword wielder. Never seen that before.
    Lets see where this goes.

  11. I'm so excited about her joining the cast! I haven't read the graphic novels (but it's definitely on my todo list now) but I found out about Michonne through posts on IMDB last season. However, you wouldn't know she's a fan favorite there as a lot of posts are calling her arrival unnecessary and unrealistic *rolls eyes*

  12. I mentioned briefly about this in my personal blog http://shirocanna.blogspot.com/2012/03/walking-dead-season-finale-whoa.html
I was so excited to see this new character, eve though her face was not revealed as much on the final episode of the previous season, I could tell that she was a black woman and searched who she was shortly after.

Not to stray off topic, but I honestly sometimes forget T-Dog is even on the show. He barely has any screen time and I'm surprised he hasn't been killed/zombified yet! I have nothing against his character, I just forget about him and think maybe for him to be more outstanding, he should have a bit more screen time, lol.

Anyhow, this is one of my favorite series on tv! I can't wait to see the new season coming this Fall!

  13. I figure many white TWD fans will have a problem with such a cool popular character being a Black woman......prepare to be pissed the f*ck off with stupid comments straight outta someone's arse....ala The Hunger Games.....

  14. I love the TV series, even though I have not read the comic.. I am can't wait to see this kickass black chic, I hope she and Glen hook up

    1. I don't think that will happen. Glenn and Maggie are together in the comic and neither has died. I mean they could change things a bit but I doubt they'll overcome the racial bechdel test for interracial dating. Most likely she'd be paired with a black or white character. And I doubt Glenn would get another love interest.

  15. I began reading the comic after I watched the first season of the show. I was amazed at how different it was compared to the first season of the series. I actually stopped watching the show and focused on the graphic novel. Michonne is an amazing character! She is written well and her character really develops in the graphic novel. I think her appearance will lead to me watching the show again. Or I'll keep pouring my money into the graphic novels instead lol

    1. lol. Yeah, there were some parts in the AMC series that almost lost my interest but I stuck with it and the end of Season 2 turned out better than I thought. :)

    2. I was ready to give up on TWD during Season 2. They were killing me on the farm; they were stagnant and operating under the delusion that the zombies wouldn't find them there. Hershel, a vet, doing life-saving surgery on Carl and he's up and around and fucking shit up a mere week or two later without a hint of infection. Lori's ass...let me stop lest I pop a blood vessel.

I ordered the compendium Friday; it should be here this week. Can't wait to read; I'm told it's much better than the show.

    3. Hey Amaya

Did you get to read the graphic novels? What do you think?

    4. It got lost in the mail, and Amazon gave me my money back but I never re-ordered the compendium because it was from the same seller. With it being off season, I forgot about it, but now I got to try again.

I'm not able to watch this season. I've got fucking DISH!

  17. I bought my husband all of the Graphic Novels for his birthday and Christmas last year. He is going to MTAC with me as Glenn <3 When yahoo introduced the news of Michonne, I was surprised how little people knew about the graphic novel. Some dude posted "she would have been cooler if she were Asian" which kinda (okay not kinda, really, at the time) ticked me off. And then there were those who thought she was a guy. But Yes! Totally excited about next season!

'Walking Dead' Producer Eyes Tyrese, Morgan's Return...

"Michonne has arrived. The Governor isn't far behind. With those two players on the way, which other fan-favorite "Walking Dead" comic book characters might make their debut next season? According to Glen Mazzara, the answer could well be… Tyrese!

The "Walking Dead" showrunner participated in a conference call with press (via MovieWeb) and answered questions about the upcoming third and fourth seasons of the AMC zombie series. During the call, he confirmed that Tyrese is a character that's still very much on his radar, along with a few other familiar faces.

"I think the Tyrese character is someone we are interested in introducing at some point," said Mazzara. "We still have Morgan and Dwayne, who are out there from the pilot. We are interested in them. There are new characters that will be original to the series. Not coming straight from the comic book."

    *********************************************************

    ***Somewhat of a spoiler***

I have a feeling if they do introduce Tyrese they are going to make him a prisoner at the prison (because you know black men are in prison)**sarcasm** It will basically keep in line how they treat POC's on tv.

    1. Zombies are gross, but it's really not about the zombies. It's about survival, and morality, and the choices we are forced to make in difficult situations. The zombies could be replaced with hordes of rabid pandas and the essence of the show would remain the same.

      Delete
    2. Zombies are also a huge yawner which, for me, detracts from the essence of the show.

So by all means, bring on the rabid pandas.

      Delete
    3. In all honesty, Ankh, ain't nearly enough zombies in this bad boy. I'm not a zombie lover by any stretch of the imagination, but with the way the characters bicker and fight, I prefer to see more of them turned into dinner because they annoy the fuck out of me. And I think rabid pandas might actually be more interesting.

But Huy is right. "The Walking Dead" refers to the survivors, not the zombies.

    4. For me, honestly, one zombie's way too much.
