  2. That is horrible, but you can't blame the whole country. Blame the people who made that monstrosity and the pos's who actually pay money to buy it.

    1. The country, in my opinion, is to blame because it has developed & maintained an environment in which behavior like this allowed, accepted, and even defended.

    2. Racism is deeply imbedded in your culture. It is not an isolated incident. It is a collective effort by those who benefit so greatly from other people's torment. Usually, the method of perpetuation is subtle, but every once in awhile, a blatant attack is used to maintain the hegemony. Also, the frequency of explicit racism skyrockets when you introduce anonymity.

In all, I find it difficult to reconcile white people's public proclamations of anti-racism with their persistent implicit racism, explicit racism while anonymous, support of white supremacist mainstream culture, and rapacious indulgence of white privilege.

So while I can't blame certain white people for what other white people do, I can certainly call them out on their own complicity, which extends far beyond mere complacency.

    3. One more for posterity. Let's not forget about the racism denial. Whites not only deny systemic racism, but also, against all logic, deny blatant racism. It's one thing to claim ignorance on racism that is intentionally supposed to fly under the radar, but for white people to deny blatant racism is utterly reprehensible. To deny racism is to claim that PoC are so irrational that we can't be trusted to make any conclusions about society, even though, collectively,we've never been wrong about racism. It is also an attempt to actively oppose our efforts to end racism.

FYI, whites can only use ignorance as an excuse once. After a PoC approaches them to point out they're bullshit, they're no longer ignorant. I don't really buy that excuse the first time they use it; I'm definitely not going to take that shit a second time.

  3. Is it bad that I'm not even mad about this? I don't mean that in an, "It's nothing! Get over it!" manner. More like, "Ah, I see they're showing their asses again.". How many times have people cussed them out about shyt like this, and they still can't get a clue?

    1. I know, right? It's business as usual in post-racial America.

  4. Depressing. And I don't believe for a second that this was the skaters' idea. The company probably thought they were using a term of endearment....

    1. Along with the "Black people get to say it so we should too" argument, that's the excuse white people use to say the n-word, right? Only problem is Asian's don't exactly walk around going, "What's up my gook?"

Moral of the story: white people will look for any excuse to say a racial slur. If they can't find one, they'll say it anyway.

BINGO. Could not have said it better.

One of the many "whites" in my institution couldn't wait to tell me the story about her racist uncle from the bowels of Pennsylvania who loved throwing around the word nigger. She literally said it five times in rapid succession as if to impress me. Our German colleague was all over her ass like white on rice (literally) before I could catch my breath. It's weird when a former East German, who was raised to hate and despise everyone else, has a racial consciousness and that Pennsylvania trash is clueless.

    1. It makes (some) white folks feel better about themselves.

Feeling better about themselves has always been fashionable.
