"Afraid of the Dark"

From Scot Nakagawa's "Race Files":

Reports of rapid demographic change in favor of people of color in the U.S. seem to have caused a reaction among many whites bordering on panic. Explosive increases in participation in white nationalist groups, the proliferation of vigilante border patrols, and the return of overt racism in mainstream politics all smell like fear to me. This reaction got me to thinking, why? Why are they so afraid of the possibility of becoming a minority?

Here’s my take. But first, a reality check. White fears are of becoming a minority are over-blown. As I’ve written elsewhere in this blog, whiteness has shifted to envelope those formerly deemed non-white many times throughout history. The Irish weren’t always considered white, nor were Jews. They were included among whites in order to maintain white advantage.

As racial demographics shift, so-called white Hispanics and certain Asian American ethnic minorities are likely to be enveloped by whiteness. Whether we think of ourselves as white or not, accepting the privileges already being extended to us – being cast as the “good immigrants” or buying into the idea that Asians are a “model minority” relative to so-called “problem minorities,” for instance – will put us on the wrong side of the color line. And when the stakes are so high, we can hope folks won’t take the bribe, but I wouldn’t advise betting on it.

So white folks can rest easy. Armageddon is probably still a way off.

  1. Great topic of discussion.

I remembered remarked about a similar one.Scott is correct about this issue. I call it "white convience".They're White when it benefits them as long as they don't violate their status quo. I would rather go through the hardships of being me,than to take the easy way out and find out that Ive been used up later

I get why some Asians resent the model minorite. Yes,at first glance,it seems honorable that you're being respected by them, but when you read the fine print of what the purpose of it,you'll know that it nothing but a sham. Look at the Jews as an example. Most of them are White: they are prosperous, powerful and the US,yet if you ask a Neo Nazi about them, they will express their hatred of them just as much as they would a Black person. Arabs...they same way. They are minorities who were accepted as White, yet these days they are being spat on.Even with Christian Arabs, they aren't exempt from the ruccus.I had a long talk with a Lebanese American man who wondered how many people would show up to their festival out of fear of being judged for being Araband been accused of being a terrorist.

If you're minority, you're at risk of being a victim of prejudice. No amount of education, great jobs or money will not prevent you from experiencing it and it can happen at any day on any level. To the true White racist if you're not White, you're not right.

  2. Here's what stood out to me:

This is how you actually speed up "armageddon." This how you remind your so-called model minorities that you're not really the same, you don't really like them, and if you could exterminate them all, you would.

This is how you show the white social construct for what it really is.

What POC would want to envelope themselves in that?

    1. Exactly. One minute your "down" with White man and the next you're being put back in you're being put back in your place. White society is not for nobody but themselves

    2. I can't speak for others, but as an Asian man whos lived in america all my life, I've never felt as if white america has accepted Asian men. You could make the argument that Asian women have been accepted, but with all the shit white people have put Asian men through...hell no.

    3. Not quite. I would say that the US encourages certain unions so that people will support white supremacy. The US has had international relationships at the expense of Asian women, think Korean rape victims whose children were taken from them during the Korean war, but often those narratives are portrayed as white US men saving/liberating Asian women from Asian men or serving as the best union for Asian women at the expense of Asian people overall. I remember taking Japanese American exp in college, a class that I kind of struggled through. Anyway the professor made an observation that after WWII many second and third generation Japanese American women were encouraged by their parents to marry white men. This was partially in response to the environment and the stigma associated with being Japanese from that time. So these unions and the idea that they have always been innocuously favorable is a narrative being supported by white people/white men without an understanding of where this comes from. The military has had a large hand in encouraging/forcing certain types of interracial unions and spreading this sort of propaganda.

Unfortunately you have too many of them that you can rent.

  4. That's the thing about Rented POC; they come at a stiff price, believe it or not.

It's one thing to be complicit with Massa while living in a mansion, driving a Bentley, and never worrying about bills. You scratch Massa's back, he waxes and polishes yours.

But if you live in a hole, and Massa makes it clear you're going to stay in that hole - regardless of your willingness to be rented - the whole scenario quickly changes.

What we're seeing is the New & Improved Massa of the 21st Century. He doesn't want housebroken POC or rented POC. He just wants to be rid of all POC...as far as he's concerned, God can sort out the complicit from the defiant.

  5. well i think its wonderful that more Ethnic people are being represented RESPECTFULLY in the media and in the world period and for the comment on "White people being the Minority" Historically white European people have always been the minority of the worlds human population even since the being of Human existance. Every SHOULD know by now that Human civilaztion started in Africa which means that the first people were African. When our ancestors said "hmmm? lets go Travel the world guys?" They when to different areas like Asia, South America,Australia, North America and they made civilizations there too. Having lots and loooooots of children in the process of course and of course becoming many. It wasnt until a loooooong time until Europeans came around...so....yeah...Ethnic people have always been and always will be the majority..If Ethnic people become the minority then the existance of the Human race is in danger because there no people on earth who possess enough dominant Gene's to help the human race stay strong & genetically healthy.... ;)

Great food for thought! I've often found it quite interesting (and almost comical) when I see some other people of color consider themselves to be white. Never ceases to leave me with a Scooby Doo "Rhuh?!" expression.
