'Pacific Rim' Movie Review: HOT or NOT???

Good afternoon Everyone -  Just saw the movie 'Pacific Rim' in 3D on opening day and I thought it was alright.  Normally, I wouldn't watch movies in 3D because they usually have a quick 5 minutes of actually 3D parts but this movie definitely had about 15-20 minutes worth. lol. If you like the visual and CGI effects then this is your movie.
SPOILERISH ALERT!!! Beforehand, I didn't know anything about this movie until I saw the trailer, so I was thinking this looked like Godzilla but with giant robot guys.  Was this just me?  lol.  The plot was somewhat slow moving, the acting was poor, but what made up for it was the action sequences with the creatures.  I'm sorry but the creatures opened a few cans of whoop@**.   Definitely the highlights of the film. One question though,  they build these huge mechanical robots for the humans to use to defend themself but apparently they have swords and guns but never use them???  Why is this???  lol.  Overall though, the movie was fun to watch.  On the replay value, I would probably never watch it again unless I flipped past it on TV.  Speaking of movies, are there any good ones that you are looking forward to watching???

  1. I'm a scary movie type person. I'm looking forward to The Conjuring.

  2. Got to see Pacific Rim a week ago. It was good but I was confused about the movie itself. I just didn't get it.

In other words, wait for it on Netflix. Do we at least get to see a lot of Idris Elba?

  4. There was a lot of Idris Elba, which was great because he was the only decent actor in this movie.

I thought the acting and story were terrible, but the visuals were cool (not beyond anything we're already seen though). I wish I didn't make the effort to watch it in the theatre, it was a waste of time. Some people think it's the best movie in a long time...I don't know why, lol.

  5. Not the best blockbuster of the summer, but still a whole bucket of fun. Good review Robert.

  6. I'm back home from seeing Pacific Rim today and I really enjoyed it. I may not see it again but to me it was worth watching in the cinema. I was there for Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi. I walked into the cinema actually believing that there would be more POC in this film (but of course it was the same old story with the white hero and I'm so disappointed with the way the Chinese and Russian mechas were so easily taken out. Like seriously, these people were battling the kaiju in the 5 years that white dude was building a wall).

As for other stuff I'm watching. I'm another horror maniac, I've been going through Sion Sono's filmography and will be watching Exte next. Then Aku no Kyoten (Lesson of the Evil) from Takishi Miike, then because I recently read several chapters of Junji Ito's Tomie series, will be watching Tomie: Forbidden Fruit and Tomie: Rebirth. I'm also interested in watching The Grandmaster, Woman Knight of the Mirror Lake and will be rewatching Kahaani (I love love Vidya Balan). That should be about it ;)

From what I've seen those who think the movie is awesome are there for Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Guillermo del Toro and the robots. I'm not sure any movie that has come out this summer will be better than this one.

    1. Speaking of Crimson Typhoon a.k.a. the Wei Tang Clan, meet the Luu Triplets.

  7. Okay, so I went to see it today, and even though Idris Elba was lunchable, and Rinko Kikuchi is a goddess, and Guillermo del Toro was behind the camera, and this movie DID have some moments....oh was there some fail.

Mm-hm. Let's start with this bullshit right here. The Chinese guys were HOT, and they should've had hella more screen time and certainly not gotten take out like that. Same with the Russians.

There's also the issue that this story had promise and with a little tweaking (and less over-exhaustive action), there could've been something real here. Rinko and Idris really convinced me they were adoptive family, and I think that relationship should've been explored further.

I think they should've spent a lot more time in the beginning explaining the development of the Jaegers (and also shown more Black world leaders).

I'm not sure any movie that has come out this summer will be better than this one.

There won't be. The trailers have been back to back fail, from The World's End to Captain Phillips to Ender's Game to the sheer joke of a film that's Seventh Son.

    1. You probably will have to go to China and watch their version of the movie. I hear that since they have so much influence that movies coming there have added scenes (more screen time also) for Chinese characters.

    2. I along with my confusion with this movie ,a lack of clarity is what was missing. It definitely would have been much more enjoyable if they would have explained some of the characters purpose for their roles. I like movies that has a good storyline. PC wasn't a bad flick but it could have a whole lot better if it would have been more definitive.

    3. Indeed. Pacific Rim's disappointing because it shouldn't have been - there was plenty to work with...including finding something other than that weak-ass title.

  8. I think Pacific Rim is definitely more for people who are fans of the giant mecha type series like Gundam Wing, Evangelion, and so forth. In essence, it's a very nerdy film.

And while I wished there were characters of color with speaking roles, it didn't feel as bad in this film. Maybe it's because Idris' character wasn't having Raleigh's shit. Maybe because Mako wasn't the stereotypical Asian Dragon Lady/submissive lady. Maybe there's so much fail in everything else that this seemed like a miracle.

Honestly, I feel like Raleigh was the weak link in this movie. Even the Australian jerk guy was more interesting. I also feel like Raleigh could have at least been a biracial character or Latino. Might not make him any more interesting but it would be better.

Well said. I also would've liked to see the "drifting" process explored and explained more. I loved the calibration sequence when people moved in sequence.

    2. By the way, good point about the Kaiju/mecha genre; I'm totally dig the idea, I just wish PR had been done a little better.

  9. Based on the comments here, good, bad and ugly, I know this movie will be a huge hit in Japan. Monsters vs. Robots with Idris cannot fail. Though I won't see it in the theater, I'll send every youngster I know that way.
