Not So Dark & Twisted After All

On this week’s episode of Twisted, Kyle does actual police work, Danny tries to get his mother to admit her innocence and Jo learns a secret pertaining to Lacey’s visiting father.

The episode began with a romantic moment between Danny and Lacey. There was kissing and coupling things. I don’t hate Lacey or think she is an insufferable character - I just don’t like that she wants to hide her relationship. I think Danny and Lacey are good for each other and are passionate and romantic. I’d be full on Team Danny/Lacey - except I am on Team Danny is a Murderer.

On the last discussion about this show, I quoted Charlie Almanza who believed Twisted is losing its edge.

Um...how did we get here?

When I first got into this show some paltry few weeks ago, I didn't hesitate (okay, maybe I briefly hesitated) to buy all available episodes from Amazon.com.  Then came the waiting, the irritating realization I'd have to wait seven days to see the next one and the next one and then...I woke up today and realized it was that time of the week.  Instead of feeling eager my very first thought was, "...Already?"

How did we get here?

This was the show that hit the ground running.  This was the show whose pilot pimp-slapped its competition in the ratings.  This was the show which featured a Blasian kiss five episodes in.

So what the fuck happened???

I'll tell you what happened; the writers got too wrapped up with Avan Jogia's being too damn fine popularity and started focusing on turning his character into a tender, romantic, tragic hero of a heartthrob.

Fuck that shit.  I want my body count.  As soon as Danny's cleared of Regina's murder, I want him to go out and ice Lacey's ex-boyfriend Archie Yates.  Or Sarita (still no last name).  Or Tyler Lewis.

Or Principal Mark Tang so that Rob Yang can be put out of his contractual misery.  Did y'all see that bullshit in this week's ep?  Tang's obsession with Karen continues, which is appalling considering he's married with kids (to answer your next question, his wife on the show is also Asian).  Danny finds some...pictures...which Tang made of himself and sent to Karen.  When Danny tries (and fails) to blackmail Tang into providing an alibi for Karen, Tang flat-out tells Danny about the relationship and how his mother...did stuff...just to keep him in school.

Danny eventually realizes that although his mother once wished for a girl, then gave him a toilet paper apology about being sorry "if" she hurt his feelings, THEN called him an ungrateful brat for calling her out on her bullshit...despite all this she's since broken laws and seduced folks to make up for being a lousy mother.  They have a touching scene which annoyed me because it seemed genuine, and I want Danny's sociopathic charm back.

After telling us a bunch of stuff we pretty much knew, while revealing a couple things we didn't know but might have guessed, Chief Masterson finally decides to stop being dumb as a box of hair and realizes that it's very likely someone else killed Regina, and that Vikram Desai may still be alive (we even got a flashback!!!)

Big whoop.  Explain to me again how we got here?

On the upside, our brown boys are bonding and they're having some great scenes.  From last week's ep we got this:

And this week's ep gave us this:

Oh, and did I mention Lacey dumps Danny?

Talk to you next week!

  1. I actually did a marathon sunday and watched the entire series. I noticed a few eps in how Lacey's back story -family etc really want shown

then you get introduced to her dad and find out he's gay in one episode? I feel like the only reason they did that was to pimp Jo and make Lacy look worse for not telling her about Danny.

    1. Hmmmm....interesting thought. Maybe that was Jo's way of trying to get more out of Lacey.

And shut people up for wanting see/learn more of this family.

so right. I kept wondering my Lacy's mom Robin Givens isnt more involved with Jo and Danny's moms (totally forgot their names)But I don't buy their 'friendship'.

M - that's a possibility. I wouldnt be surprised if Danny ends up not being the one that really twisted in season 2

  2. Ahh..I finally get to see Lacey's family, but there are a couple of things that disappointed me a little 1) The show outing Lacey's dad as being gay so quickly. I wish that would have some time for the viewing audience to learn more about him, what he is conflicted with, then tell us that he's gay. I just felt that the answer came out too quickly. Maybe Lacey's dad may be an on and off character on the show , idk..but even with that, it was too fast. It didn't give us to imagine with him. Secondly, Lacey's family is dysfunctional and Robin is playing a single mother. Nothing wrong with that if only they didn't get most Black characters steretypical roles as being that all of the time.Otherwise, I was just happy to see who they were. A part still hope that the writers will focus a little more on this family.

To me, Twisted seems more of a serious teen soap opera than a mystery show. Maybe that is what it should be. Either way , I'm learning and liking the show. Boy, it may not have promised the scary drama that many of the fans probably expected on the show, but it was definitely a drama, indeed. I admit,it was something else to look at.

I wiped my forehead when Rico mentioned about seeing Karen throwing the necklace on the ocean. I thought that Danny would be " OMG..dude you didn't tell me " and dump him as a friend, but all was good .I also liked the part that Rico and Danny are spending more and more time with each other. Rico is such a sweet guy..he seems to be a good friend to Danny, but I wonder how long will that last after looking at that clip on his computer of Lacey making out with Danny?

I was thinking about what Jo told Lacey about her dad. Now, there are a lot of things I know about people. Unless it's a matter of life or death, I don't know if I would be so quick to tell. Unless, Lacey asked Jo about his lifestyle, I don't think I would have told it..at least not immediately. I found it ironic when Jo talked about being honest. If she really knew about Lacey's secret..lol.

Danny may have had the gun,but I still don't believe that he had anything to do with Tara's death. Idk. again it's a case of the obvious not always being obvious. Even though Principal Tang said he had an affair with Karen, I don't think he did it. I thinking that it could be Chief Matherson did, but again, I wouldn't be suprised if he didn't do it. Rico could also be implicated in this, but I don't think so. Idk, maybe Vic's mistress or Principal Tang's wife could have don't Idk.

In spite of Danny saying he had the gun, I thought that Lacy and Jo jumped the gun(ironically) without hearing him out. If they are supposed to be his good friends they should have listened to what he had to say and to determine their own thoughts about him from there. Danny may have had the gun,but for what? He just said he had the gun but not confessing killing anybody.

I can't wait for the season finale. Like you, I want more body counts( lol) on the show..and of course.more Danny , Lacey and her family.

  4. I actually like the route TWISTED has taken. No... actually, I love it. LOVE IT.

I remember in an interview that one of the actors, when questioned how Twisted was different from Pretty Little Liars, mentioned how TWISTED was about relationships.

I don't watch horror movies and prefer "suspense", so this is right down my alley.

The premise of the show is based on three BFFs who were broken apart by tragedy and how, years later, they struggle to reconnect as tragedy strikes again. Rocky "Relationships" and "Trust" seem to be the driving themes of the show.

    1) The Danny/Jo/Lacey FRIENDSHIP
    2) Danny and his mom
    3) Jo and her family
    4) Lacey and her family
    5) Jo and Rico
    6) Danny's Mom and Jo's mom
    7) Lacey, Regina, Sarita and Phoebe
    8) Danny and Lacey's romance
    9) Jo's confusion over Danny
    10) Jo's relationship with her peers/outcast
    11) Lacey and Archie
    12) Jo and Tyler

Formerly titled "The Socio", TWISTED, I think, is supposed to examine the nature of its main character, Danny. They make a point of spelling out the traits of a sociopath in the "Pilot" and later have Karen, Danny's mom, speak to Danny's therapist who reminds the audience of the traits of a sociopath and adds that they rarely kill, but prefer to go around manipulating and charming people through an ability mimic normative human behaviors, but without the "attachment".

So this one of my 2 gripes with this show to which I'm totally addicted (it's the only show that I am watching in real time this summer - the real horror is waiting a week for the next episode and knowing that the episode after next week's will be a recap ep."Boooo! Hisssss"). I think the show makes its socio theme a little too subtle. Subtle to the point where I feel like the audience forgets that people/the town are actually afraid of a boy who can mimic human emotions. Unless the writers are hoodwinking us, Danny is clearly a victim to the town as he is always showing us how good he is, just a little scared, naive and overprotective at times. The suspense over whether Danny is really a sociopath isn't there as much as it could be. He clearly seems emotionally attached to both Jo and Lacey and doesn't seem to mimic human emotions; he actually seems to be one of the more authentically emotional characters on the show, hiding information because he is scared, etc...! (He is probably less a sociopath and more a kid who suffers from attachment issues). I guess they want us to hope a clearly innocent Danny can prove himself to the town based on the writer's direction.

My other gripe, is Lacey. I understand her, but it is getting to the point where it seems like, in their attempt to write Jo through a "protectionist lens", they dump all they heavy stuff on Lacey so that she becomes the fall guy... almost like good cop, bad cop. Not liking that... but I "get" her.

I don't have time to proofread! Hopefully, what I've written isn't all gobbledygook and that there is a point somewhere in here!

Did I mention I love this show? Okay... great. :)

    1. It's good to see this level of excitement about a show airing in real time.

  5. At the end of the day, I won't be satisfied until we find out that Danny manipulated Jo into killing Regina and then brainwashed that nitwit. One can hope. I fear I'll be disappointed.

What in the hell is up with ShadyTess? Is the actress that poor or is she that good? I can't read her at all. Exactly what is her function, conjunction-junction?

If Danny is a sociopath, he'd better step up his game. Right now, he's a pretty boy with great hair, Mommy issues, Jo issues, and Lacey chemistry. I need something TWISTED to happen on this show. Sarita as his sister is just fine with me as long as she gets more air time.

Maybe Danny controls Sarita or Rico. He'd best control someone who isn't Lacey.

I don't think Regina was the one screwing Vik; I think it's Tess and that's why it came out the night they got high. Tess is probably still screwing Vik (and who can blame her), Regina found out, and so they had to bribe her to STFU.

      AMEN.

  6. Yeah... so I watched TWISTED AGAIN, last night. I didn't realize how much I missed from the last episode since I watched it real time ... so...

QUESTION: Did the writers intend for the principal to be East Asian or did casting make that decision, 'cause... I missed the entire office scene the first time and didn't even see that they help up a picture of his family (and I'd only seen the trash bin pictures last night)... I can't. WHAT?!?!

I was already in denial about the hair combing incident and Todd's new girlfriend...

I'm re-evaluating.... I don't understand why they are doing this... it's not comic relief, it's stupid and because the lead is Southeast Asian, I think they believe they have some sort of "license". Like wtf... don't mind me... had to vent once I got up this morning.

I'm right there with you. I think the writers believe that because the lead is Asian, they have free reign to use cast another Asian in a role only (or mostly) white folks would find amusing. I don't find Tang's characterization amusing at all; in fact, I was horrified when I realized where the writers were going with him.

Rob Yang is a nerdy cutie and this character is a waste of his gentle charm. At least in this ep, he basically got to tell Danny, "I've been fucking your mother...so you need to go somewhere and sit the fuck down before I have you tossed out on your ass." Cold, but real.

  7. New here! I'm really enjoying your reveiws and the comments. I was wondering if anyone noticed that Danny was going to let his mother take the fall for Regina's murder until he realized that he would have to move to Arizona, THEN he wanted to talk her out of her confession.

    1. Let me put it this way...that's what I thought initially. The show is called "Twisted" after all, and I was like, "Oh, yeah...here's my Danny."

But then I wondered if he'd been really willing to let her rot in prison, or if they're just faking us out. I prefer to believe the former.

    2. I really think Danny is a sociopath or something dark but because Twisted is on ABC Family they can't go very far with it. If only this show was on AMC. Anyway, your right they may just be playing everyone. I hope not I want, in the end, Danny to actually be twisted. I want the show to expose that not only is he a murderer but also manipulating everyone to get what he wants, including Lacey and Jo. Here's to hoping.
